Our Journey
2002 - 2009: Before Sowing The Seeds
After completing my 12th and having admission in correspondence college in 2002, I (Pradeep Kumar Gupta) embarked on my professional journey by joining a renowned travel company specializing in the domestic and inbound market. Under the mentorship of Mr. Dharamveer Singh Aluwalia, I immersed myself in various roles within the travel industry, gaining experience as a Travel Package Sales Executive, Tour Manager, Escort, Ground Handling Specialist, and Planning Manager. This diverse experience from 2002 to 2009 allowed me to understand the intricacies of the travel sector deeply. By early 2009, I felt a strong urge to create something lasting and meaningful, leading to the inception of Indian Travel Desk with my school friend, Sushant Biswas.
2009 - 2010: Foundation and Expansion
In 2009, I took the bold step of transforming my vision into reality by founding Indian Travel Desk. I brought on board my school friend as a silent partner, and together, we embarked on this entrepreneurial journey. Our company initially focused on providing services to tourists planning to visit North India. We quickly gained popularity due to our excellent ground handling and competitive pricing. In response to growing client demand, we expanded our offerings to include a variety of domestic destinations across India, such as Kerala, Goa, the Andaman Islands, the North East, and the Eight Sister States.
2010 - 2014: Our First Office
Like many other startups, this company also began with a single person operating out of a 10×12 square foot room. But thing were going in positive direction and within a year, we moved into our first office in District Center Janakpuri. Everything was progressing well, with our company growing and adding new destinations for our travelers to explore, enhancing our capacity to serve them better.
2014 - 2016: Expansion and Challenges
Things were progressing well, and the need for a larger team to handle the increasing workload became apparent. We expanded our sales team, content writers, and SEO team, while outsourcing only development services. During this period, we developed over 10 websites, each dedicated to a specific destination with its own staff to handle inquiries. We invested heavily in marketing to generate a high volume of inquiries and also outsourced to acquire more leads. To accommodate our growing team, we moved to a larger office within the same Jaina Tower building in District Center Janakpuri in 2016. From the beginning of 2014 onward, it felt like we were on the verge of becoming a major travel company. However, things did not proceed as expected.
2016 - 2019: Market Shifts and Difficulties
During this time, new competitors entered the Indian travel market with large investor funding, making the competition much tougher. On the Other had, The availability of free Internet and the rise of YouTube vloggers increased traveler expectations and lowered profit margins. We started to realize that the costs of maintaining 12 websites and several blog sites were giving us negative returns. Additionally, the high expenses for our large office and big staff began to drag our success downward.
2019 - 2022: Feel Like God Working Desperately on Us
We were already struggling with high operational costs, low margins, and intense competition when COVID-19 hit, feeling like the pandemic came only to finish us off. Initially hopeful, we thought things would improve in a few months, but we ended up dragging through 2020 with no income and substantial expenses for office maintenance, partial salaries, and development costs. By the end of the year, we faced huge losses and significant loan burdens. This marked the end of Indian Travel Desk. We shut down our office, informed our staff to seek other opportunities, and stop all development work due to lack of funds and loan defaults. Left with no choice, I used this time to enhance my marketing skills and secured a position as a PPC Analyst in a reputable IT company.
2022 - 2024: Rebuilding and Relaunch
At the beginning of 2022, the travel industry experienced a major upswing, but I couldn’t take advantage of it due to lack of necessary resources like staff, office space, and infrastructure to serve travelers. However, I not left the hope that things would turn around. During this time, while working as a PPC Analyst at a well-known IT company, I started building my own IT setup and development and with the mutual effords of my co-working friends I able to relaunched my website in June 2024, Since I didn’t have enough staff to handle queries from travelers across India, I decided to focus on serving customers in North India first and gradually expand from there. Story will continue…….
